As the planet enters further into the twenty- first century, challenges that were merely discussion topics in the past have developed into real problems. Whether refering to enviornmental or humanitarian issues, it has become clear that ignoring problems like global warming, water conservation and global pestilence and famine are done so at our own peril. On a positve note, awarness and individual action focused on solving these problems is rising all the time. While a great deal of serious work is needed by all people of the planet in order to repair the intense footprint we have made, those of us living in the most prosperous nations should take this obligation quite seriously. Surely, human ingenuity can overcome any challenge if the need is great enough. It begins by focusing locally.

If you want to see an example of local awareness and action, the Eco-Fest 2008 in Chico California was a great example. The event was six hours of music, food, games and information. Billbords full of examples demonstrating methods for improving a variety of enviornmental issues were on display from universities across the country. Booths were sett up everywhere with people giving out key chains, stickers and information of all kinds. At one booth I spoke with a woman representing Heifer International. She informed me that her organization is focused on supplying livestock to impoverished communities across the planet. Another stand represented the Enviornmental Action and Resource Center where I was able to get information on a number of future events that focuse on these same issues. Overall, the event was a great display of locals gathering to learn and exchange ideas that will help improve the state of the planet, while having a good time in the process.
Events like eco-fest are great because, for those who don't always remember the severity of some of the present issues the planet is facing, they are great ways to remember our obligation, but have fun in the process. Issues like these can be exausting to tacle, given their enormity, so it helps to celebrate while doing it. Everyone loves a good time and everyone needs to be aware. Eco- fest was a great way to do both.
